The Designer of Magic: The Gathering Has Addressed the Backlash Against the Card Game’s Recent Crossovers
Following the announcement of Magic: The Gathering's crossover with major franchises, including Fallout and Assassin’s Creed in 2024, the game's primary designer, Mark Rosewater, addressed the fan criticisms he received.
Reported by The Gamer, Rosewater mentioned in his blog: "The purpose of this blog is to give you an insight into where Magic design stands at a given time. The game often evolves in unpredictable ways. If I were asked a decade ago, as was done by many, I wouldn't have anticipated Universes Beyond."
This is in stark contrast to his opinions in 2018 when asked whether the makers would "consider adopting a different IP and developing distinct cards for it." At that time, he said, "Magic is a unified game, not a mishmash of disparate elements. We aim for Magic to remain our own identity rather than becoming somebody else's".
