Activision Introduces Controversial Paid Rewards in New Squid Game Crossover Event
The introduction of a new crossover event in a popular gaming franchise has garnered attention, particularly for its approach to rewards. Recently, Activision announced that players will need to make an additional payment to access the best items linked to the Squid Game crossover event, marking a notable shift in their typical strategy.
In a blog announcement, the company provided details about the Squid Game event, which features a limited-time multiplayer mode named Red Light, Green Light in Black Ops 6. Additionally, new operator bundles inspired by characters from the hit Netflix series are available for Black Ops 6 and Warzone.
However, the introduction of the Squid Game Event Pass has sparked some controversy. This new pass includes a complimentary rewards pathway along with a premium reward track, with the premium options housing some highly sought-after rewards, including the Front Man Operator skin. Accessing the premium track requires 1,100 COD Points, equivalent to roughly $9.99.
This marks a significant first for the series, as players have typically encountered standard and premium battle passes but not a dedicated premium pass for an event. The reaction to this announcement has not been overwhelmingly positive, particularly among devoted fans of the franchise who are currently frustrated with the ongoing issues in Black Ops 6 and Warzone, including widespread cheating, an ineffective anti-cheat system, and various connectivity challenges.
The Squid Game Event is scheduled to kick off on January 3 at 10 AM PT and will run until January 24 at 10 AM PT, offering players a limited window to partake in the new content and challenges.
